I just spent about 30 minutes trying to figure out why my php.ini file was not updating on MAMP. (This is not MAMP Pro–if you are using pro then edit it in the template)

So, I’m hoping that this post will help those of you who are having issues doing the same.

First. Where is the php.ini file located?
/Applications/MAMP/bin/php/php5.2.17/conf/php.ini
or
/Applications/MAMP/bin/php/php5.3.6/conf/php.ini

Select phpInfo on your start screen of MAMP to see which version is running on your machine before editing. Or you may end up editing the wrong php.ini file and compounding the problem. (It’s right at the top of the page next to Start) Once on the phpInfo page do a search for “php.ini” and look at the file location.

Second, Depending on your php.ini settings, everyone uses different ones, you MUST restart MAMP for the changes to show up. This is what was making me crazy. I made the changes, refreshed the phpInfo page and nothing changed. But, restarting MAMP and all of the sudden they were all fixed. Makes sense, but not until after I figured it out.

Hope that helps!

It seems to me that Facebook could really have a massive impact on charities and people actually doing good. It wouldn’t just have to be through Facebook ads. It could also be through people’s timeline and News lists.

Imagine if a charity showed up in your news feed promoting some action or campaign. If a user decided to Like the charity or get involved it would show up in their timeline as them doing good.. or “What I did Good today”. I think Facebook could create something called “Social Good”.

Facebook could also offer Facebook Credits for your getting involved and doing a certain action.

Finally, Facebook could offer a grant every month to non-profits for sponsored stories. The more viral these get the more often they show.

Well, I’m going to do my best to help! But please be careful of eBooks or sites promising illegal couponing—such as those used by one of the “Extreme Couponing” individuals.

The path to learning is going to be very simple and straight-forward. We’ve cut out all the nonsense and get right to the point by walking you step-by-step through the process.
Where do you start? That is the question I asked, too. It took nearly three or more months to piece it together on my own. Each trip to the grocery store was a new lesson, and often left me asking more and more questions. It took a lot of research to get a clear picture.

My goal for my eBook is to help you get started by learning from my mistakes and to teach you what I learned along the way. This book may not answer every possible question about coupons so if you have more questions you can go to howtocouponextreme.com and ask away! Find out the latest deals and steals at stores near you!

But you can go and buy the eBook for very little. You’ll save enough in one purchase and go on to save hundreds of dollars a month. The book is on Amazon so you can download it and learn from my mistakes.

It just seems to make sense to learn from the company you are trying figure out.

Everyone signs up for those great introductory offers and becomes a loyal customer to a company for a year. Then a year later guess what? The price doubles. Well that is what happened with Comcast. Did their service get better? No, it just got more expensive.

When this happened with DirecTV they gave me a new promotional offer to keep me loyal. What does Comcast do? They send you to customer retention only to be told good luck with your new service. If they can’t upsell you then they don’t care or want to know you. So, I’m going to move over to a bundle with DirecTV. At least I know they will take care of me.

BTW Comcast, just because your customer service people talk sweetly to you, that doesn’t make it great customer service. Good luck Comcast, I’m going not paying you $110 for internet and phone when I can bundle with DirecTV for a slightly slower internet and landline for $45 a month.

I have been searching for a while for something to scrape data. I’ve wanted to scrape some football player data and cross-check it against other data. Well, after trying all sorts of php/mysql methods I found the most unbelievably simple way to do this. No programming necessary.

I’ll walk you through a really simple example:
Step one: Go to Google Docs — You need a Gmail account.
Step two: Open a spreadsheet
Step three: In one of the tables add the following:
=ImportHtml(“http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=PASSING&conference=null&season=2011&seasonType=REG&d-447263-s=PASSING_YARDS&d-447263-o=2&d-447263-n=1″,”Table”,1)
I know its a lot. It is actually the top NFL passers taken from the NFL.com. See the page here.

The magic is in the =ImportHtml
You can find the Google Functions information about it here.

It’s an amazing tool to pull information from tables or lists.

Here is my Google Doc with the information.

Okay, it doesn’t work perfectly, but ever wondered who is copying your work and what they are doing with it? Even worse, want to know if someone is giving you attribution and know if someone is linking back to your site after taking an excerpt?

Although its not foolproof, Tynt is a start. It’s a service that automatically puts a link at the end of the copied text so if someone puts it in an email or on their website (and don’t delete the link) then you can track it. Tynt puts a tracking code at the end of the url and gives you a dashboard to track.

I’ve just started to use Tynt so more to come, at least for now it automatically puts a link at the end and I don’t have to hope someone does that extra step. All you have to do is go through the steps and paste the javascript in between your
tags.

Cut and paste some text from this article to give it a test.

I was trying to to take a step out of posting something on WordPress and then the need to go to Twitter to post. There is a great plugin WordPress to Twitter that autoposts, lets you bit.ly and even stop a post from going to Twitter. It had every feature I wanted and have been using for a few weeks and just thought I’d let everyone know about it.

The WP-to-Twitter plugin posts a Twitter status update from your blog. URLs can be shortened using a variety of services; the focus is on services which provide statistics for the link. Available shorteners are Cli.gs, Bit.ly, Yourls, and WordPress.

The plugin can send a default message for updating or editing posts or pages, but also allows you to write a custom Tweet for your post which says whatever you want. Both custom Tweet texts and your default message supports a variety of shortcodes to substitute your blog title, post title, etc., in your tweeted update.

Any status update you write which is longer than the available space will automatically be truncated by the plugin. This applies to both the default messages and to your custom messages.

Download it here.

Here is how you install:
Upload the `wp-to-twitter` folder to your `/wp-content/plugins/` directory
Activate the plugin using the `Plugins` menu in WordPress
Go to Settings > WP->Twitter
Adjust the WP->Twitter Options as you prefer them.
Provide your OAuth integration keys.
Optional: Provide your URL shortener API key if you want to have statistics available for your URL.
That’s it! You’re all set.

Well, its actually pretty easy. After searching and searching around it was funny how it was sitting right in front of my face.

Spotify Premium allows you to wirelessly sync all your favorite Spotify playlists to your phone and listen . Listen wherever you like without being connected to the internet. Just log in to Spotify once every 30 days to prove you’re still a Premium user.

Or go online and stream any of the millions of tracks in the Spotify library. You can use Wi-Fi or 2.5G/3G to use Spotify just as you do on your computer. Access your account and all your playlists, or go track-hunting.

Today at the gym I saw a trainer texting while his client was killing themselves on the leg press. If I looked up and my personal trainer was texting during my time I’d fire them. He couldn’t wait until after to return a text? It was embarrassing.

The bad part is that the person was probably too nice to say anything. And that is a problem too. One person accepting that kind of behavior makes him think its okay and then if the next person does the same and the the trainer believe its a proper thing to do. And that is part of the problem at most companies. They start out meaning well and hoping to provide good service, but over time it slips and slips and those who use the service just build a tolerance for decreasing service quality. It happens all the time and it has grown more and more acceptable. But for those who never let their service slide will find themselves on top. Service still counts and if you provide great service then you will win in the end.
